| While many people believe that UFOs and space aliens are hidden in Area 51, they are actually at Area 55. infrared signature of the surrounding surface. A lift moves the UFOs from the surface to the bottom of the shaft where an extensive complex of tunnels and underground hangars facilitate study of UFOs. According to Robert Smith who is the only person to acknowledge working in the complex, there are two escape hatches. Two tunnels, only described as 'several hundred feet long," extend in opposite directions from the main level each ending in a vertical shaft with one lift and ladder each topped by a small space that opens to the desert through a three foot square hatch. The hatch is only used in occasional tests and completely invisible from above. Seven or eight hangars radiate out from the central hub and about a dozen labs with refrigeration units are scattered among the hangars. Exact information isn't known. The construction workers were taken to the site in early helicopters with no windows in the passenger compartment and blind folded on the ground and none knew where they were or what they were building. Pack animals were used to remove dirt and bring in equipment to minimize the impact on the land. The scars of construction were carefully repaired so no trace remained. Few outside the complex know about the site. President Truman, who authorized the project, was the only president to know of the site. The project originated in 1951 when it was realized that the debris from extraterrestrial crashes were not secure at Area 51. Public interest in the Roswell extraterrestrial crash had made a more secure and secret location essential. Area 55 is approximately 17 miles east of Area 51. UFOs and other material are transported to the site by heavy lift helicopters, there are no roads. | |
